Dr Olga Tkachenko is a policy officer in the Medical Devices Unit in the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety at the European Commission. She graduated with an MSci and BA in Natural Sciences (Biochemistry) from the University of Cambridge in 2013 and went on to obtain a PhD in Physical and Theoretical Chemistry from the University of Oxford, where she investigated mechanisms of protein aggregation in neurodegenerative disease. She joined the medical device team at the European Commission in December 2017. Her responsibilities include various aspects of in vitro diagnostics, borderline products and collaboration with the Joint Research Centre for establishment of EU reference laboratories. She is chair of the In Vitro Diagnostics sub-group of the Medical Device Coordination Group. The IVD sub-group consists of national competent authorities, with stakeholders participating as observers, and oversees the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2017/746 on in vitro diagnostic medical devices.
